Bai Men (Baat Mun): The Eight Gates, referring to eight forms of energy or 'jin/ging' that can be applied in Taijiquan. They are all manifestations of the single internal energy potential of Taiji, which assumes these various forms depending on external variables: direction and intensity of an attack, distance, timing, and so forth. In esoteric Taiji philosophy, the Eight Gates are related to the four cardinal points and four corners of the bagua hexagram. All of the eight energy applications are practised in the Taiji form. A caution: the English translations, even the Chinese names, can be misleading: each energy has a unique feeling that can only be learned through diligent practice.
