Ground: The name that is applied to the coating of the surface on which the painting is to be carried out. Thus gesso is the ground for a wooden panel. A canvas is given a ground by sizing and then priming. Painting surfaces such as water-colour papers, boards and parchment act as ground and support at the same time.
