Middle Ground: The area of a painting between the foreground and the background. In a landscape this usually where your focal point would be. See Background, Foreground.

Atmospheric Perspective: Suggesting perspective in a painting with changes in tone and colour between foreground and background. The background is usually blurred and hues are less intense.

Racking Focus (Pulling Focus): Shifting the focus from foreground to background, or vice versa.

Shallow Focus: A small depth of field, with just one plane (foreground, middle-ground, or background) in focus.

Deep Focus: When all planes (foreground, middle-ground and background) of an image are in focus.
