Collage: A method of picture-making which incorporates a wide variety of materials and often a certain degree of relief besides actual painting. Papers, cards, textiles, wood fragments, fur, small stones, metal foil, etc., can be used. The manner evolved from papier colle, a 19th-century leisure pastime. The Surrealist Kurt Schwitters did considerable work in this manner early in this century. Max Ernst was another attracted to the freedom of the technique.
