Arbor Day: The Latin word arbor means tree. J. Stanley Morton, in the 19th century in Nebraska came up with the idea of planting trees as a way to celebrate spring growth in his nearly treeless state. Morton promoted the idea of Arbor Day and in 1885, his birthday April 22 was declared a legal holiday to plant trees. The idea has spread across the Americas and is celebrated on various days in April and May.
