Read-Only Memory (ROM): Stands for Read-Only Memory. A semiconductor-based memory system that stores information permanently and does not lose its contents when power is switched off. ROMs are used for firmware, such as the BIOS used in the PC; and in some portable computers, application programs and even the operating system are being stored in ROM.

Programmable Read-Only Memory (PROM): A special memory chip that is blank when first purchased. It can be written to by the user by using a special hardware programmer. Once the data is written to it, it cannot be erased or changed.

Rambus In-Line Memory Module (RIMM): RIMM is a synchronous dynamic random access memory (RAM) module that is used on newer motherboards. RIMM's are manufactured by Rambus Corporation.

Random Access Memory (RAM): All memory accessible at any instant by a processor. Called random because of the random placement of information within the memory bank. Operates at very high speeds on a high speed bus, to the CPU.
